Power, propane, water, septic, internet and cell: what actually reaches the lake, and what you arrange yourself.
Electricity and propane country
Electricity is La Plata Electric Association, a member-owned co-op since 1939 — you get capital-credit refunds over time, and their outage map is the one to bookmark. Source: lpea.coop.
There are no gas mains up here — it's propane country. The suppliers locals rely on to run CR 501 reliably are Basin Co-op (Durango) and Ferrellgas (Bayfield). Get on a keep-full or auto-delivery plan and order ahead of cold snaps.
Top off the propane before Halloween and never let it drop below about a third in January. The coldest week is exactly when the truck has the hardest time getting to you.
Water, septic & trash
- Water: there's no domestic water district at the lake — homes run on wells or cisterns (see the buying section for permit classes). Bayfield's town system serves the town only.
- Septic: nearly everyone is on a septic system, overseen by La Plata County Public Health. Budget to pump it every few years.
- Trash & recycling: there's no county pickup, but WM (Waste Management) runs CR 501 — trash on Wednesdays, recycling every other week. The haul-it-yourself option is the Bayfield Transfer Station (4496 CR 223). Use bear-resistant cans either way — see the wildlife guide.

Coverage is patchy up here. Here is what works, where the dead zones are, and your options for home internet.
Fiber is being strung at the lake right now
Clearnetworx is running a roughly $13M grant-funded fiber build along CR 240 and CR 501 toward Forest Lakes and Vallecito — about 1,400 addresses. Cable is going up on the overhead lines beside the lake, but it's not lit at lake addresses yet. Home internet options now
- Fixed wireless — Visionary Broadband lists Vallecito by name (vcn.com; they absorbed SkyWerx in 2017), and AlignTec serves La Plata County by free line-of-sight survey (aligntec.net). Both depend on a clear sightline to a tower.
- Starlink — the reliable fallback in the canyons and the trees, and what a lot of full-timers run as their main or backup line.
- CenturyLink DSL — legacy copper reaches some addresses; it works, but it's slow.
Ask your prospective neighbors what they use — coverage here is address-by-address, sometimes tree-by-tree.
Cell coverage is spotty: plan for it
Coverage around the lake is patchy, with real dead zones on the CR 501 drive. A T-Mobile tower was approved at Forest Lakes, and Verizon's footprint draws complaints too. It's getting better, slowly, but the standing advice holds: download your maps offline and screenshot key info before you drive up, and tell someone where you're going. Signal boosters help where there's a faint signal to amplify; they can't make coverage from nothing.
Mail & deliveries
There's no post office at the lake — every lake address is "Bayfield, CO 81122," served from the Bayfield Post Office (145 W Park St, (970) 884-9618). Good news for full-timers: USPS delivers, and FedEx, UPS, and Amazon all deliver up here too.
Healthcare, schools & county offices
- Primary care, Bayfield: CommonSpirit Primary Care Bayfield (formerly Mercy Family Medicine — locals may still call it that), 480 Wolverine Dr Suite 3, (970) 764-9150.
- Kids: Pediatric Partners of the Southwest has Bayfield clinics.
- Emergency: the nearest ER is Mercy Hospital in Durango (~45 min), (970) 247-4311 — in any emergency call 911. Full list: emergency & lake contacts.

- County offices: Assessor and Clerk at 679 Turner Dr, Durango.
