Launching your boat at Vallecito Lake
The paperwork, the inspection everyone goes through, and the mountain-lake tricks that take most people a season or two to learn.
Vallecito Lake has one public boat ramp, managed by the Pine River Irrigation District (PRID) and open May 1 to October 31, roughly 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (confirmed with PRID, October 2026). You need a registered boat, a Colorado ANS stamp for motorboats and sailboats, and a PRID permit. Every trailered or motorized boat passes a free inspection first.
The 60-second version
Before your trailer ever reaches the water you need three things: a registered boat, a Colorado ANS stamp (motorboats and sailboats), and a PRID recreation permit. At the lake, every trailered or motorized boat passes a quick, free aquatic-nuisance-species inspection at the station by the marina — it's the law. Show up clean, drained, and dry, have your paperwork handy, launch early on summer weekends, and keep an eye on the afternoon weather.
Can I launch today?
- Ramp season: the PRID public ramp is open May 1–Oct 31. Outside that window it’s closed.
- Paperwork: trailered/motorized boats need an ANS inspection + Colorado ANS stamp (in season); SUP/kayak are exempt.

The paperwork
Boat registration
Colorado-registered motorboats and sailboats must display current registration numbers and decals. Out-of-state registration generally covers a short trip — check CPW for non-resident rules.
ANS stamp
Every motorboat and sailboat needs an Aquatic Nuisance Species stamp before launching — $25 resident, $50 non-resident. Buy it at cpwshop.com or any CPW office, and keep your receipt (printed or on your phone) with you on the water.
PRID permit
A Pine River Irrigation District recreation permit is required to use the lake — day, annual, and a boat-combo rate for motorized/trailered craft. Prices and where to buy: Licenses & permits.
Non-motorized kayaks, canoes, and SUPs don't need an ANS stamp or the boat combo — just the per-vehicle recreation permit.
The inspection: what to expect
Colorado law requires every trailered or motorized watercraft to pass an ANS inspection before it enters the water. At Vallecito the station is right by the marina, staffed daily through the season. It's free and takes a few minutes if you arrive prepared.
The whole system runs on three words — Clean, Drain, Dry:
- Clean: no mud, plants, or debris on the hull, trailer, or motor.
- Drain: Colorado law says you must pull the drain plug and empty all water — bilge, livewells, ballast — before you transport. Arrive at the ramp with the plug out.
- Dry: the drier the boat, the faster the inspection. If you've recently boated in mussel-positive water elsewhere, expect a decontamination step.
One easy-to-forget step: put the drain plug back in after inspection and before you back down the ramp. It's the most common rookie mistake on any lake.
Step by step at the ramp
Vallecito has one public boat ramp, managed by PRID and open May 1 – Oct 31, roughly 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. (a little shorter early and late in the season). One ramp means courtesy and speed matter — do your prep before you take your turn.
- Prep in the staging area, not on the ramp. Remove tie-down straps, load your gear, attach the bow line and a fender, raise the motor, and reinstall the drain plug.
- Back down slowly with a spotter. Hands at the bottom of the wheel, small corrections. Don't dunk the trailer hubs deeper than you need to.
- Float it off, walk the boat to the courtesy dock on its line, and move your truck and trailer to parking right away.
- Retrieving: stage the trailer, line the boat up, winch it snug, then pull forward and clear the ramp before you strap down and unload.
Always have your registration and ANS proof aboard, and clip the engine cut-off (kill switch) lanyard before you start.
What's different up here
Vallecito sits at about 7,665 feet — higher than most visitors have ever launched. A few things behave differently up here:
Thin air, less power
Engines make noticeably less power at altitude. Allow extra room to get on plane, don't overload a pontoon, and a carbureted motor may need altitude jetting.
Afternoon weather
Mountain thunderstorms and canyon winds build fast on summer afternoons. Launch early, watch the sky, and head in when clouds stack up — lightning and whitecaps arrive quickly. Check live conditions first.
Cold water
This is snowmelt. Early-season water is cold enough to cause trouble fast if someone goes in — dress for the water, not the air, and keep life jackets on.
Changing lake level
Vallecito is an irrigation reservoir, so the level drops through summer. Watch for newly shallow spots, stumps, and rocks late in the season, and check the current lake level before exploring the upper end.
Rules & courtesy
- Life jackets: one U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD for every person aboard, and children 12 and under must wear one any time the boat is underway. Boats 16 feet and longer also need a throwable (Type IV).
- Who can drive: Colorado requires motorboat operators to be 18, or 14–17 with a state-approved boating safety course. (These rules changed recently — confirm with CPW.)
- No-wake zones: keep to wakeless speed near the marina, docks, the day-use areas where people swim, anchored boats, and close to shore — it's both the rule and good manners.
- Carry the basics: a fire extinguisher, a sound device (whistle or horn), and navigation lights if you'll be out near dawn, dusk, or after dark.
- Don't drink and drive a boat. Boating under the influence carries the same kind of penalties as a DUI.
